About Dr. Dempsey
I'm Dempsey and I'm so happy that you found my page! I am currently a licensed psychologist in the state of Pennsylvania and also authorized to practice an many states across the country as a PSYPACT provider. Click here to see if your state is a PSYPACT state. But let me tell you a little bit about my background... I obtained my doctorate in clinical psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, an APA accredited program. I completed most of my initial training at universities such as John Marshall Law School and DePaul University providing individual and group therapy as well as assessment. I completed an APA accredited internship at Pennsylvania State University Counseling and Psychological Services. I also stayed on for a year of post-doctoral training here as well. I have been trained as a generalist meaning that I have worked with a wide range of mental health concerns and am continuing to provide services for nearly any difficulty you may be experiencing. However, I also have specialized training in trauma, college student mental health, couples/relationship counseling and working with LGBTQIA+ clients.
Please see more extensive information on my education and training below. But first, I want to share that helping others find purpose, passion, balance, happiness, empowerment, and more in their life is my passion. My work with people is very important to me and I strive to provide the best help as possible. It is my objective to guide and walk with you through your journey of healing no matter what difficulties may be coming up for you. Not only is this my objective, but it is a privilege to get to hear and see you as you find your authentic self and move to a path of happiness, joy, and fulfillment that YOU DESERVE!
I will share that I have also experienced difficulties and hardships in my own life that I feel help me connect to client's pain in an empathic and caring way. I have worked on my own path to healing and fulfillment throughout my life and know it can be challenging but is the most important thing that you can do for yourself. It's impossible to know another person's experience fully, but I also believe that the pain we feel from the past or in the present is a very similar feeling that a lot of us share. I think this is why I feel so deeply for people, especially clients, and why relationships with them are so important to me. And, this really informs my belief of the importance of not only our connection to ourselves, but to others in our lives as well. But trust me, when I decided to work on my healing process, it was the most meaningful thing I could have ever done for myself and has led me to a place where I feel like I truly love myself, my life, and those I hold close relationships with as well (especially my husband, two dogs, and two ferrets)! Yes...yes... I know everyone's first thought when I say that I have two ferrets is "oh, don't they smell"... well they actually smell fine with a certain care regimen... just thought I would throw that out there (haha). ANYWAY! I am confident that I can help you with your path of healing and living your authentic self too.
You deserve a happy and meaningful life and I am here to help you make that happen. Let's talk! An initial phone consultation is free and we can discuss your concerns and goals as well as have time for me to provide more about how I work in therapy and to answer any questions you may have. From there, we can decide the next step together. It would be amazing to hear from you and discuss the possibility of working with each other!
My Approach
I always ask for feedback from my clients about what was most helpful for them through our time together and clients always note how I provide a very safe space with validation and empathy but also am "not afraid to be direct" when needed and "just being authentic." I am definitely not the "smile and nod" therapist. You will probably hear me curse every once in a while, I will laugh loud with you, and you may experience the "dog or ferret" video bomb at some point! I really believe that being our authentic and real selves is integral to healing and happiness and how can I expect you to be that with me if I'm not also being "real" too?
I work from mostly a relational-cultural and interpersonal framework in therapy encouraging connection, safety, trust, and valuing the relationship between the two of us most to promote healing. Our relationship to ourselves and those around us can often be the source of our difficulties and through our work together, we can bring about change and fulfillment through improving these aspects of your life. The context of our worlds are so important and impact us in many ways. I take a holistic and a multicultural approach helping you explore many aspects of yourself to feel more integrated and whole including not just the hard stuff, but your strengths too. However, every person is unique in their experiences and struggles. I at times will integrate skills, creative expression, psychoeducation and more to best meet your needs and unique struggles. If my approach resonates with you, I think we would be a great fit and can begin working on your path to healing, happiness and empowerment. Ready to heal and create change in your life?
